Pandemonium and tears at the weekend enveloped Abraka community in Delta State when a 26-year-old microbiology student of the State-owned University (DELSU) identified as Evelyn Mogekwu allegedly committed suicide after being jilted by her fiance. Reports said the end of the seven-year relationship traumatised the girl as all plans to walk down the aisle failed to materialise. Sources said the girl was in high spirits in her hostel but her mood changed dramatically and she became dejected after her fiance called her on phone to declare that their relationship over. She was said to have bought some drugs, claiming she was having a head ache and went into her room, leaving a message for roommate that they might not see again. Few minutes later, her roommate who sensed something terrible was going on, raced into the room and found her lying lifeless on ground. She she raised an alarm that attracted other students to the room, but before help came the girl’s way, she had given up the ghost. Confirming her death, some senior police officers at the Abraka Police Division, who did not want their names in the print, said they recovered particles of drugs on the ground beside the deceased, adding that her roommate is currently being detained for interrogation.

STILL ON SGF APPOINTMENT As of 12.00 AM Tuesday June 23, 2015, No appointment has been made by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari for the Office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Strong and credible argument is being made against the candidature of Dr. Ogbonaya Onu for that post. It is being argued, debated and suggested that since the immediate past SGF Distinguished Senator Pious Anyim Pious is from Ebonyi State, it will be tantamount to unfairness, injustice and disregard to equity in the geopolitical arrangement of the Southeast region if another person from Ebonyi State ( i.e. Dr. Ogbonaya Onu) is made SGF. 'Equimagnanimus' demands that since Ebonyi state has taken a shot at SGF, then it should be the turn of another state in the Southeast to do so! His Excellency Dr. Ogbonaya Onu (Fmr. Governor of old Abia State) is of course a very good and intelligent man. But so also are His Excellency Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige( Fmr. Governor of Anambra State) and Prof. Anthony Gozie Anwukah (Fmr. Vice Chancellor of Imo State University Owerri and now current Secretary to the Government of Imo State). GOD BLESS NIGERIA

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted an invitation to travel to Cameroon for talks on regional cooperation to defeat Boko Haram Islamist extremists, his office said on Tuesday. Cameroon's President Paul Biya was a noticeable absentee at a recent summit of regional leaders in Abuja to cement a new fighting force to take on the insurgents. Observers attributed his absence to strained ties between the two neighbours, who squabbled for decades over the sovereignty of the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula until it was ceded to Cameroon. Buhari last week told AFP in an interview that he was planning to visit Cameroon. On Tuesday he accepted an invitation from Biya delivered by one of his ministers, Buhari's office said in a statement. "President Buhari said that he will visit Cameroon for the high-level talks soon after the end of the Ramadan fast," the statement read. Buhari, 72, has made eradicating Boko Haram a priority for his fledgling administration, which has been in power for less than a month. Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin have all agreed that a new 8,700-strong force should be deployed by July 30 to take on the Islamists. The Nigerian government under Buhari's predecessor Goodluck Jonathan frequently complained about Boko Haram using northern Cameroon as a base to attack northeast Nigeria. Biya's envoy, Sadi Rene Emmanuel, told Buhari of Cameroon's "fraternity, sympathy and brotherly commitment" to working with Nigeria to "eradicate the scourge of terrorism", Buhari's office said.

A 34-year-old man, Solomon Ajisafe, has been arrested by the police for allegedly torturing his girlfriend, Tope Amuda, in the Igbo Olomu, Ikorodu West area of Lagos State. PUNCH Metro learnt that Solomon, together with his mother, a leader in the Oodua People’s Congress, and some hoodlums flogged Amuda with canes for alleged adultery. Our correspondents were told that afterwards, she was taken round the community, before ground pepper was allegedly inserted in her private parts. The incident happened last Sunday at about 7pm on Aminu Toyin Street. A resident, who identified herself only as Adunni, told PUNCH Metro that attempts made by neighbours to stop the torture was rebuffed by the OPC. Adunni said Amuda, a 25-year-old Osun State indigene, lost her mind due to the trauma she suffered. She said, “They did not allow anybody to rescue her. They made jest of her for hours as they took her round the community. I saw her; she was speaking to herself and was incoherent. That was when I discovered that she had lost her mind.” The General Secretary, Igbo Olomu Community Development Association, and Coordinator, Women Arise Initiative in the area, Adebayo Obatungbase, said she reported the matter at the Igbo Olomu Police Division. She said the community was planning to send away Solomon’s mother, whose name was given simply as Mrs. Ajisafe, from the community. She said, “The suspect’s mother calls herself a prophetess, but she is also a member of the OPC. We have decided to send her away from this community.” The Chairman, Igbo Olomu CDA, Michael Adekoya, described the incident as “sheer acts of wickedness.” He said, “The police are trying, but we need special attention from the government. This community has turned to something else. Why would a normal human being insert pepper in a woman’s private parts?” However, Solomon told our correspondents that he only slapped his girlfriend, adding that they had been dating for the past four years without anything to show for the relationship. He said, “I am a hardworking man and I had a son before I met her. We have dated for four years and during that period; there was no child between us. She has been a thorn in my flesh because she always made trouble with my family. “She later fought with my mother and because of that, she decided to pack out of the house. Nine months later, she returned and said she was three months pregnant for me. That was when I beat her. I confessed to the police that I beat her up, but it was only a slap which made her eye to swell.” Solomon’s sister-in-law, Ayomide Ajayi, a nursing mother, who was equally arrested, told PUNCH Metro she was innocent. Ajayi, 27, said, “I don’t know anything about the allegation. You can ask her.” But the victim, Amuda, insisted that Solomon and his family members tortured her. Amuda, who spoke in Yoruba, said, “He and his family members used bottle to insert pepper into my private parts. I am done with this relationship. Let everybody go their separate ways.” A police source told one of our correspondents it was possible Amuda was also flogged with a charm. The source said, “When we picked her from the general hospital, she could barely walk. They really dealt with her and she has been giving us some useful information on their occult operation.” Our correspondents learnt that the Office of the Public Defender had equally shown interest, leading to the arraignment of Solomon and Ayomide before an Ikorodu Magistrate’s Court on three counts of assault. The charges read in part, “That you, Solomon Ajisafe, Ayomide Ajayi and others now at large, on June 14, 2015, at about 7pm on Aminu Toyin Street, Igbo-Olomu, Lagos, in the Ikorodu Magisterial District, did assault one Opeyemi Amuda by beating her with cane all over her body; that you indecently and unlawfully assault her by inserting pepper and a bottle inside her vagina, which caused her bodily harm.” The defendants pleaded not guilty. The magistrate ordered that they be remanded in custody, adding that the case file be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, for legal advice. While adjourning the case till July 15, 2015, the magistrate asked the police to take the victim to a rehabilitation centre.

The Secrets Of Distinction In Higher Institution The fact that you are in the higher institution or about to enter is not a big deal, the most important thing and the expectation of people is what you come out with(YOUR GRADE). I will like us to start with a practical analysis. Lets take a look at the short conversation that came up between two students in an institution. SPEAKER 1 : Hello, how was your acc211 exam result? SPEAKER 2 : omo nah re-run oh. SPEAKER 1 : what of MTH217? SPEAKER 2 : That one too nah re-run jare. SPEAKER 1 : And BAM212? SPEAKER 2 : Guy,nah like 8 re-run I get and I like am. This school is really interesting,I want to spend more years here. Did I just hear you say what?! This writeup is meant for people who knows why they are in the higher institution or what they are going there for. It is not to be doubted that the higher institution is a free world but one would be heading for the rocks if he or she does not take important the primary reason for being there. Business firms today employ's the services of young, intelligent and vibrant youths of the labour market. If those at the top sponsor their children to school oversea, must we lay in ignorance and let them come back and take over from where their fathers stopped? If our voice must be heard, then our certificates and knowledge must be standard as this is the only weapon we have.It is impossible to just sit in your comfort zone and expect everything to start falling in place,we are not in camelot and you are not merlin. TO MAKE DINSTINCTION IN HIGHER INSTITUTION: 1)You need to have a mindset : For you to do or become anything, you need to desire it. The whole of your body must be ready to work towards the achievement of such goal. From my little experience,I will tell you that if you are in distinction in your department, you will automatically command respect. You will make few speeches because your GP[Grade Point] will speak for you. So,you need to decide in your mind that you are going for distinction and nothing less. 2)Discipline : A disciplined person can also be referred to as a principled individual. Someone who has a target or a goal don't need to make friends with everybody. Some people are parasites, they only want to see you go down. Some just find pleasure seeing you stagnant. Move with people you can gain from, people with experience in your field of study. Time discipline is also an important factor. When a man fails to properly manage his time, then his life and future is in danger. Countless adults wish they can reverse time to make amendment but unfortunately,it is late. That is why a time wasted can never be regained.MAKE GOOD USE OF YOUR TIME ALWAYS. 3)Never Sleep Over A Topic : This is one of the reasons why students fail in schools today. When a student piles up note leaving them unread,he is personally setting a trap for himself. Compiling of result in the higher institution comes from the following angles : * Attendance in class * Submission of assignments * Snap tests * Mid-semester exam * Examination. When a student revises what is been taught in class in a day,he gets to have more understanding of the work better and tends to become equipped and ready for any sudden or immediate test that might come up. It also reduce the exam tension of such individual as proper foundation has been layed since the genesis of the semester. 4)Never Joke with assignments, class attendance and necessary text books : Lecturers take their assignment very seriously and would stop at nothing to deal with anyone who fails to do it. Through doing assignments, you get to increase your initial scores and also get a wider knowledge about the course topic which will be of great use to you. In addition, recommended text-books or hand-outs must not be handled with levity, marks might be awarded for the purchase of such and it would also be of great use to you while studying. Attendance marking remains a vital recipe to attaining distinction as you must always be present in class. Compiled and written by : Kayode Oluwatobiloba Emmanuel
